Scouting Roundup College Football Week: 1

Hello reader and welcome to the first of many “scouting roundups” for this upcoming season of college football. I hope you have read all of the prospect previews I did over the summer and enjoyed them but if I am being honest, this is where the real fun begins. I can finally stop saying that this draft class has more questions than answers because they will begin to answer those questions with their play this year. Since this is the first roundup of the season I’m going to spend a little bit of time telling you what to expect from this weekly article. First I will start out with “News and Notes”. The news and notes will cover everything and anything happening in the football world. After that most weeks, I will my official “Big Board” which will be a list of players ranked by pure skill and nothing else. Following up the “Big Board” will be three must-watch games for every week and I will provide the Players for each team you should be watching for the draft. Next, I will lay out specific players I will be watching extended tape on every week in a segment I’m gonna call “Tape Study” (creative I know). Last but not least I will end the week with a “Stock Report” this will include the results of my previous weeks’ tape study and any other player who helped or hurt their stock. With all of that stuff out of the way I say we should get started with some news and notes for this week huh?

News and Notes

The biggest news this week as far as the draft is concerned is Nick Fitzgerald being suspended for the first game of the season. Fitzgerald is a senior starting quarterback on a fairly talented team in the SEC so it is unexpected to see a player like that suspended. Nick is someone who was coming into the season with a lot of buzz from scouts. Some were saying that he could compete for QB 1 this year.  Fitzgerald was my QB 4 to start the season and I dropped one spot to QB 5 because of the suspension. With that said I do not think this is a huge deal besides it being a bad look for an up and coming player. Fitzgerald not playing should not affect Mississippi State’s chances to win on Saturday because they are playing Stephan F. Austin.

Top 25 Big Board

I just want to say one very important thing. THIS BOARD WILL CHANGE. It is only the preseason so do not get worked up if I forgot someone or have players ranked to high the board will get larger and more accurate as the year goes along.

Three Must Watch Games for Week One:

Game One: Washington VS Auburn: Saturday, 9/1 3:30 PM

Not only are both of these teams ranked but they also have a lot of draft talent on both sides of the ball. Washington is going to produce a lot of NFL talent this year and Auburn has my current QB 4.

           Players to watch for Washington:

Trey Adams: LT2

Taylor Rapp: Safety 2

Myles Gaskin: RB 10

JoJo Mcintosh: Safety 7

      Players to watch for Auburn:

Jarrett Stidham: QB 4

Prince Tega Wanogho: LT 6

Ryan Davis: WR 12

Game two: Michigan vs Notre Dame: Saturday, 9/1 7:30 PM

This is one of the most historic rivalries in all of sports and this year’s game should be great. Plenty of draft talent will be on display especially for Michigan who has two of my top 25 players on defense and we get to finally see Shea Patterson.

     Players to watch for Michigan:

Devin Bush: LB 1

Rashan Gary: DT 3

Lavert Hill: CB 9

Shea Patterson: QB 8

Players to watch for Notre Dame:

Julian Love: CB 7

Jerry Tillery: DT 8

Alize Mack: TE 5

Game three: Miami vs LSU: Sunday, 9/2 7:30 PM

Miami and LSU makeup so much of the defensive talent in the country this season making this a must watch game. Both teams have two players currently on my top 25 list both on the defensive side of the ball.

Players to watch for Miami:

Joe Jackson: Edge 3

Jaquan Johnson: Safety 1

Mike Jackson: CB 5

Shaquille Quarterman: LB 6

Ahmmon Richards: WR 5

Players to watch for LSU:

Greddy Williams: CB 1

Devin White: LB 2

Foster Moreau: TE 8

Tape Study: Week One

  1. Brian Lewerke QB Michigan State
  2. DK Metcalf WR Ole Miss
  3. Dawson Knox TE Ole Miss
  4. Levonta Taylor CB Florida State
  5. Jeffery Simmons: DT Mississippi

Stock Report: Week One

  1. Nick Fitzgerald: Fitzgerald definitely lost some stock this week because of his suspension and I dropped him one spot on my quarterback’s list from QB 4 to QB 5.

     2.    No other reports this week more to come next week!
